Watch: The India fielders held some superb catches in their fielding innings in the first ODI against Australia today (March 17) – KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill all took brilliant diving grabs.
Australia collapsed from 129-2 to 188 all out in the final 16 overs of their innings at the Wankhede Stadium. India’s bowlers were at their best, with Mohammed Shami taking 3-17 and Mohammed Siraj 3-29. But several inspired catches in the field should also be credited with restricting Australia to a low total.
Early on in the innings, when Australia were building what looked like a solid platform, Rahul snaffled a superb diving effort behind the stumps to see the back of Steve Smith. Looking to flay a short delivery into the off side, Smith slightly misjudged its length and the ball clipped his top edge. The power he put on the shot meant the ball deviated dramatically to Rahul’s right. But, diving full length, Rahul followed the ball and it nestled safely into his gloves. He landed sprawled on the floor as Smith walked off shaking his head at the shot.
A period of rebuilding followed for Australia as Mitchell Marsh recorded his highest ODI score (81) since 2016. But his wicket from Jadeja in the 20th over was the catalyst for Australia’s collapse. Jadeja went on to put in a spectacular effort to get rid of Marnus Labuschagne three overs after dismissing Marsh. The ball flew to the finger-spinner at short third as he dived low to his right, securing the ball in his outstretched right hand with his floppy hat flying off and tumbling on the ground beside him.
The crowd looked on in disbelief at the catch as he was mobbed by his teammates in celebration.
To complete the trio of outstanding grabs, Shubman Gill secured a fine catch to remove Kyle Abbott. With the batter looking to guide the ball past the slips, Gill dived low to his right. Watching the ball into his hands, he ended up face-down on the ground before throwing the ball into the air in triumph.
Abbott’s wicket was Australia’s ninth, they failed to put on another run before Siraj dismissed Zampa to end the innings. It was a superb effort in the field from India as they look to go one up in the series.
