Watch: Shubman Gill was at his absolute best today (May 26) in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023, scoring a blazing third hundred from only 49 balls against Mumbai Indians.
The Gujarat Titans opener has been in excellent form in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League and entered Qualifier 2 with scores of 101, 104* and 42 from his previous four innings. He carried on in the same vein against Mumbai, reaching the three-figure landmark once more, off 49 deliveries.
Gill was batting on 20 off 16 at one point, before he decided to break the shackles, smashing Chris Jordan for a six and a four off successive balls in the sixth over. There was no stopping Gill thereafter, and he reached his fifty in 32 deliveries.
The youngster, who was dropped by Tim David and then by Cameron Green, made the most of his chances and was particularly harsh on Akash Madhwal, who clean-bowled him when the two teams met previously in the season. Gill hit three sixes against him, going over backward square leg and the mid-wicket in successive balls before flicking the fifth ball for another maximum.
The 23-year-old reached his hundred in 49 balls, racing from 79 to 100 in only seven deliveries. He smashed seven sixes and a four in the space of 15 balls, in an innings which also took him past Faf du Plessis as the batter with the most runs in IPL 2023.
He was eventually dismissed for 129 in 60 balls, coincidentally being caught by David, who had given him his first lifeline when he was on 30. His innings was laced with seven fours and 10 sixes and was scored at a strike rate of 215.
