Explained: How Was Ishan Kishan Replaced By Vishnu Vinod Via The Concussion Rule?

Mumbai Indians’ were hit by injuries against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023, including opener Ishan Kishan being subbed out due to a concussion, which he suffered after teammate Chris Jordan accidentally elbowed him in the eye while fielding.

The incident occurred after the end of the 16th over, which was bowled by Jordan. The England quick conceded 17 runs and was putting on his cap after the over, when Kishan, who was switching sides, walked straight into the bowler. Jordan’s elbow managed to hit Kishan in the left eye, and he had to immediately walk off the field. Vishnu Vinod, who was not in the XI, came in to keep instead.

The freak injury prevented Kishan from opening the innings, as regular opener Rohit Sharma walked out with Impact Substitute Nehal Wadhera instead in a run chase of 234. Wadhera was unable to leave much of an impact, as he departed for a three-ball four. Cameron Green, who walked in at No.3, retired hurt soon after, still in pain after getting injured while fielding.

Mumbai’s struggles continued after it became clear that Kishan would not be able to bat, and he was ruled out due to a concussion. Vinod was named as his substitute, with IPL playing conditions allowing for a concussion replacement since 2020.

IPL 2023: What does the concussion rule say?

According to clause 1.2.9, a concussion replacement can be sought by a team after a player suffers from a head or neck injury during a game and the team doctor formally diagnoses a concussion or a suspect concussion.

The replacement player should be a “like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his team for the remainder of the match.”

In assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the IPL Match Referee should consider the likely role that the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.

As Vinod passed all the above clauses, he was named as Kishan’s concussion substitute and walked out to bat in the 12th over. He had previously played two games in 2023, scoring 32 runs at a strike rate of 133.33.
